Mountain Home is a Forged in the Dark roleplaying game where the players take on the role of a group of founding dwarves setting out to create a new settlement. Dig deep, engage in politics with your neighbors, and secure your future in a strange new land.

Mountain Home games take place over the tenuous decades of a settlement's early existence in a new and remarkable land. The game cycles through both fast-paced expeditions where the characters set out to take control of fate and the steady dig downward as the settlement expands.

Within you'll find:

  • Seven complete playbooks for player-controlled dwarves
  • Four settlement goals that give your dwarves a reason to make their new mountain home
  • All the rules and printouts necessary for your group to engage in daring expeditions, build your settlement, and discover your new mountain home's fate
  • Procedures for group-driven worldbuilding to make every game your own
  • Chapter art by Juan Ochoa and playbook art by Galen Pejeau

Mountain Home is a laid-out, fully functional game. It has an index, working bookmarks, and hyperlinks for navigation but it is still a work in progress. Buying the game now ensures you get all future digital versions of the game released right here. As I polish Mountain Home further, I'm going to be increasing the price accordingly. I've released it at a lower price today so I can more easily get feedback and eventually pay for things I can't do myself, like fill the book with art.

Digital play sheets, complete with a built-in character creation tutorial are available here. Check out the preview gif in the screenshots to the right to see it in action!

I'm looking foward community copies. Fingers crossed to get one!

Starting another show in a few weeks focused on indie RPGs and solo/coop play.

Do you ever do review copies?  I would love to play w my staff and review on the show.

Either way, congrats on what seems to be an amazing game.

Hi there. Thanks for the interest. Can you provide a link to or any information on your channel?

(1 edit)

My current show is not related to games, Son of a Witch, in season 4 and heard in 67 countries... my new show hasn't launched yet, few weeks away, but can answer any questions via email Abt it ya have.

Haven't publicly announced the name yet :)

Rn I am getting the first 6 EPS ready, have already got 5 ready and was hoping to do this as the 6th (season 1)... But I do have some other devs I'm talking to as well for the same reason, so if you aren't comfortable doing review copies no worries.

Could this be played solo ?

(+1)

Yes. It has a section on solo play and oracles in the back of the book. I have played it solo some as part of my playtests.

How well does this play with kids? I'm aware BitD has a pretty heavy bent on vices, but I'm trying to find something a bit more than "kill the monsters, take their stuff" for my eight and six year old

(+4)

As FitD games go, it's pretty low on vices, crime and grimness. I do not have a six or eight year-old but I think it's probably fairly suitable subject matter-wise. I think the base building might be a bit complex though.

I would say Mountain Home is quite low on "kill the monsters, take their stuff." Characters can fight but I didn't design the game around violence as the primary or only mode of problem solving.

Do you plan to release a printed version anytime soon? :) Maybe 2024?

I'm starting to examine the existing PoD options out there. Print books are really hard right now with how much prices have risen lately.

Indeed, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Besides obvious choices such as PoD through DTRPG or Itch.io, you may consider PoD through Amazon. It's not a great quality, but global availability is an asset.

How's the PoD thing going? Hope there is a solution nowadays. I'd be interested. Or maybe a KS version with print in mind?

Any plans to do a Kickstarter for this?!

(+1)

I currently have no plans to Kickstart Mountain Home but I have not written it off completely. At the moment, I'm not sure what value a Kickstarter would add to the game besides going to print. I don't want to be in a situation where I'm trying to charge people a second time and not giving anything new.

How has the pdf been edited since July? Any updates? The DTRPG discussion makes it sound like there are still TBDs without proper page references?

Love the idea of the game but the price makes me want to know a little more about the current status before jumping in :)

As you may have read in the other discussions, while the page numbers are currently listed in the book as "TBD", they are all accompanied by accurate hyperlinks that take you to the correct section. These have remained TBD because my layout software doesn't support dynamic page numbers to make links update correctly as page numbers change and the book text has still been changing. This is the case as of latest July update.

The release that I am working on this very moment adds what I intend to be the final new material and will also replace the "TBD" with page numbers. This introduces the possibility that they become wrong in the future, but enough people dislike the page numbers not being in the book that it seems to be necessary.

You can see how the game has evolved since it initially released in the updates in the Development Log.

Thank you for the reply! Looking forward to the update :D

Just wanted to say thanks for making this game. I ran it for the first time with my Blades group last night and we had an absolute blast. Our Blades sessions may quickly be replaced by Mountain Home. Excellent game!

I'll also be first in line for a physical book once you are ready for that. Great work!

Q) Are there any actual plays out there?

Not as of February 2022. Sorry!

Is there a chance my company GRAmel Books could get a licence for Polish version of Mountain Home?

Thanks for your interest! Let's get in touch privately and talk.

Oh my god! As soon as I can I'll get this but this is exactly the Dwarf Fortress-inspired rpg I was looking for
